The application process for prospective students has the following stages:
1. Give some thought to your proposed topic. You may have an idea of your own which is aligned with the Institutes's Research Interests or you might wish to be guided by the big picture questions and specific ideas listed on this site.
2. Contact the Institute via email isf@uts.edu.au or telephone 61 2 9514 4950 to express your interest in a research degree. It helps if you can send through a paragraph or two summarising your research idea at this stage, to help us see how it might fit with the Institute's Research Interests. You should also contact the UTS University Graduate School to get information about scholarships and enrolment in the UTS PhD program at this stage.
3. An Institute representative will contact you to discuss our postgraduate program and your specific needs and ideas. At this stage, we will try and link you up with a potential supervisor who might suggest that you access particular resources or literature to develop your research idea further.
4. You will be asked to prepare and submit a Research Proposal. This should provide a brief review of literature in your area of interest, outline the research aims and objectives, discuss your proposed methodology and approach and explain how your research will make an original contribution to knowledge. Your potential supervisor will provide guidance on the Institute's research interests. You can utilise the UTS resources listed below to guide this process.
5. The Institute's Board of Studies meets quarterly to consider all research proposals received and assess whether ISF has the capacity to supervise prospective students. If we decide that we have the capacity to supervise your proposed research, you will be invited to make a formal application through the University Graduate School application page.
Applications for postgraduate research places at the Institute are subject to the same criteria as applications to any UTS Faculty or Institute. Information on scholarships and enrolment in UTS PhD programs is available from the University Graduate School, at http://www.gradschool.uts.edu.au
The STAR site is a resource for prospective and current UTS research students that includes guides to writing formal research proposals, http://www.star.uts.edu.au
International students should also visit the UTS International Programs Office at http://www.ipo.uts.edu.au for additional information.
