Negotiating the path to sustainable urban development

Internationally the pace of urbanisation is developing countries is increasing dramatically, with the proportion of populations living in urban areas increasing daily. Urban planning is being forced to address issues of environmental and social impacts in burgeoning peri-urban communities and inevitable stresses on natural resources. The proposed study could consider either appropriate forms of decision-making for urban planning processes, or focus on empirical questions for a particular urban context, by examining the tensions, constraints, opportunities and potential solutions. Examination of how environmental and social issues are integrated in urban areas with a strong history of primary industry focus are of particular interest.
